Fly Fishing in Fujairah
Fujairah on the East Coast of the United Arab Emirates is a very different location to the West Coast. The Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean is deep up to 2000m and has huge drop offs and good current. Fujairah is the second biggest ship anchorage in the World and can have anything up to 180 tankers anchored off the coast. This provides a lot of structure that attracts baitfish and in turn attracts large numbers of Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Tuna etc.
Fujairah is lucky as there is a range of species to target from the inshore kingfish and queenfish to the offshore Mahi Mahi, yellowfin tuna, marlin and sailfish. Fly Fishing off Fujairah is very exciting and we mainly sight fish for Mahi Mahi around the anchored tankers. This often entails looking for Mahi chasing baitfish, cruising the side of the ships or baitfish busting. There are also opportunities to target sails and tuna offshore as well as queenfish inshore.
Fishing off Fujairah is year round and during summer is the main season for mahi if you are willing to brave the heat, but the good weather season is September till June which are the cooler months off Fujairah and make fishing more comfortable.
Fly Fishing Equipment
Fujairah we use a range of set ups depending on what we are targeting. The main target specie are the Mahi Mahi which we mainly target around the anchored ships off Fujairah. We prefer if the conditions allow to sight fish to the mahi and use 10# rods with a good quality reel to be able to handle these fish. We mainly use Intermediate and Floating lines with 40-60lbs fluro carbon straight leaders. But we will also use quick sinking lines if we cannot sight fish to the Mahi and need to fish deeper for fish laying up under the ships. Flies we mainly use 4/0-6/0 sized flies in baitfish patterns or poppers. Colours are pink, blue, purple, red and black.
For the larger offshore species like sailfish and tuna we will use 12# outfits with a good quality rod and a reel with a lot of backing to allow these fish to take long runs. We use mainly floating lines and will tease the sailfish or cast to busting tuna. This requires a lot of patience and time but the rewards are huge. We use a range of sailfish and baitfish flies depending on conditions.
We can provide all of the equipment if required we are part of many guide programs to ensure we have the best equipment and include Thomas and Thomas, Abel, Hatch, Sage, Scientific Angler, Simms, RIO, Cortland and Flyz Inc.
